How long should a story be?

📏 How Long Should a Story Be?

Honestly? That's entirely up to you. Here are some rough guidelines depending on what you're aiming for.

These numbers assume an average of about 150–200 words per message, counting both your messages and the AI's. If you write longer, you'll get there in fewer messages. If you write shorter, it'll take more.

📚 A Book or Light Novel

Aim for roughly 300–600 messages.

That works out to about 50,000–100,000 words, which is the length of a typical light novel or a full-length book. It's enough to build a real cast, a few story arcs, and an ending that feels earned. A story this size is one you might consider printing or saving to reread later.

✍️ A Short Story or One-Shot

Aim for roughly 30–100 messages.

That's about 5,000–15,000 words. It's perfect for trying out a new character, a single adventure, a mystery, or a "what if" idea. Keep the cast small and the goal clear, and wrap it up in one or two sittings.

🗺️ An Ongoing Saga or Campaign

600+ messages, with no real cap.

This is for a long-running world you keep coming back to: a party of adventurers, a ship's crew, a town full of recurring characters. Think of it as a series rather than a single book. It helps to break it into chapters or arcs, and to keep your character cards and lore up to date as things change.

🎯 Bottom Line

Not every story will reach your message goal, and you shouldn't force it. Every story has its own ending.

Some fade out sooner, because interest dries up or the core idea doesn't have enough behind it. Others end because they've reached a natural conclusion. Either way, you'll know when it's done.

If a story falls short, you can always step back a few messages and take it in a new direction, or start fresh with a different idea. Nothing you write is wasted. It's all practice for the next one.

Happy writing!
