Troupe

Terms of Service

Version 2026-10-09, effective 2026-10-09.

Effective [to be filled]

These Terms govern your use of Troupe, including the website at troupechat.app and the Troupe mobile app (the "Service"), operated by [to be filled] ("Troupe", "we", "us"). By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms, our Privacy Policy, our Acceptable Use Policy, and our Subscription & Credits Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

1. What Troupe is

Troupe is a client for multi-character roleplay, acting and simulation using AI language models. You create characters, stories and settings; the Service sends your prompts to AI providers and shows you the responses. Troupe does not create characters or stories for you, and AI responses are generated automatically. Troupe is text-only: you cannot upload images, and avatars and cover art come from a library we provide.

2. Eligibility

  • You must be at least 16 years old to use the Service.
  • You may not use the Service if you are barred from doing so under applicable law or if we have previously terminated your account.

3. Your account

You are responsible for your account credentials and all activity under your account. Provide accurate information and keep it current. Tell us promptly at [to be filled] if you believe your account has been compromised. One person per account; do not share or sell accounts.

4. Modes and providers

  • Safe mode: content is generated by AI providers we select and pay for ("Hosted generation"), or through your own key for a supported safe-mode provider. Safe mode is available on all plans.
  • We may add, change or remove supported providers and models at any time.

5. Bring your own key (BYOK)

When you connect your own provider key:

  • You are the customer of that provider. Your use is governed by that provider's terms and policies, and you are responsible for complying with them and for any charges they bill you.
  • You authorize us to send your prompts and story content to that provider on your behalf.
  • We store your key encrypted and use it only to make requests you initiate. We never display, log or share it.
  • We are not responsible for a provider's availability, outputs, pricing, or decisions to suspend your provider account.
  • You own your key and your provider account. You keep ownership of Your Content (section 6) when it is generated with your key.
  • You must follow your provider's terms and usage policies as well as ours. Content your provider generates is the provider's output: we do not control it and are not liable for it, but we still scan it and block anything that breaks our rules.
  • Only the models listed in Troupe can be used with your key. Models that are marketed or modified to remove safety measures (for example "uncensored", "abliterated", "unaligned" or "no restrictions" models) are not permitted and are refused automatically.
  • Our hard limits apply to everything sent with or received through your key, in every mode: no sexual content involving minors, no sexual content while a minor is in the scene, and no dangerous real-world content such as weapons capable of mass harm (Acceptable Use Policy sections 1 and 2). Only the general adult-content threshold may differ for your own key.

6. Your content

"Your Content" means characters, cards, stories, lorebooks, prompts and the AI outputs generated in your sessions.

  • You keep ownership of Your Content, to the extent it is ownable.
  • You grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, store, process, transmit, moderate and display Your Content solely to operate, secure and improve the Service. If you share content with other users, this licence extends to displaying it to them.
  • You confirm you have the rights to the content you upload, including any characters or material based on others' work.
  • We do not use Your Content to train AI models, and we do not sell it.

6A. Marketplace

  • You can submit stories (setting, characters, lorebook and opening scene) to the public Marketplace. Chat history is never published.
  • Every submission is reviewed, by automated screening and manually, before it is listed. Edits to a listed story are reviewed again before they go live. We may reject, request changes to, or remove any listing at any time, including after approval.
  • Marketplace listings must be safe mode content. Adult content cannot be listed.
  • By submitting, you grant other users a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to view, import, play and adapt your story within Troupe. You can unpublish at any time; copies other users already imported stay in their libraries.
  • You must own or have the rights to everything in your submission, including characters and settings.
  • Listings display your display name.

7. AI output

AI output can be inaccurate, offensive, repetitive or unexpected, and may resemble content generated for others. It is fiction and does not represent our views. Do not rely on it for medical, legal, financial or other professional advice. You are responsible for how you use and share output.

8. Moderation and safety

All content on the Service, including BYOK sessions, is automatically scanned by us and our moderation providers to enforce our Acceptable Use Policy. We may block generations, remove content, restrict features, or suspend or terminate accounts that violate our policies. Where required by law, we report content involving the sexual exploitation of children to the Canadian Centre for Child Protection (Cybertip.ca), law enforcement, or other appropriate authorities, and preserve related data.

9. Acceptable use

You must follow our Acceptable Use Policy. You also must not: reverse engineer or scrape the Service; bypass moderation, rate limits, credit metering or age verification; resell access; use the Service to build a competing product; interfere with its security or operation; or use automated means to create accounts.

10. Plans, credits and payment

Paid plans, credits, renewals, cancellations and refunds are governed by our Subscription & Credits Terms, which form part of these Terms.

11. Mobile app licence (EULA)

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to install and use the Troupe app on devices you own or control, solely to access the Service under these Terms. You may not copy, modify, distribute, sell, rent or sublicense the app, or decompile it except where law allows despite this restriction. If you download the app from Google Play, these Terms are between you and us, not Google; Google has no obligation to provide support or maintenance; and Google Play's terms also apply. This licence ends when your account ends or you delete the app.

12. Our property

The Service, including its software, design, and the Troupe name and logo, belongs to us and our licensors. These Terms do not give you any rights to them except the limited licence above. Feedback you send us may be used without obligation to you.

13. Third-party services

The Service relies on third parties including AI providers, moderation providers, hosting, email and payment processors. We are not responsible for third-party services, and your use of them may be subject to their terms.

14. Termination

You may delete your account at any time in Settings or at troupechat.app/account/delete. We may suspend or terminate your access if you breach these Terms, if required by law, or if we discontinue the Service; where practical we will give notice. On termination, your right to use the Service ends. Sections 6 (licence for legal retention only), 7, 12, 15–18 survive.

15. Disclaimers

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available". To the extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We do not guarantee the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that content will be preserved; keep your own backups.

16. Limitation of liability

To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or lost profits, data or goodwill. Our total liability for any claim relating to the Service is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or CAD $50. Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including your rights under applicable consumer protection law.

17. Indemnity

You will indemnify us against claims, losses and costs (including reasonable legal fees) arising from Your Content, your misuse of the Service, your use of a provider through BYOK, or your breach of these Terms.

18. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable there. Disputes will be resolved in the courts of Ontario, except where your local consumer law gives you the right to sue in your own jurisdiction. Before filing a claim, contact us at [to be filled] so we can try to resolve it informally within 30 days.

19. Changes

We may update these Terms. For material changes we will notify you by email or in the app at least 14 days before they take effect. Continuing to use the Service after that date means you accept the changes. If you do not agree, delete your account before the effective date.
