Troupe: frequently asked questions
Troupe is a multi-character AI roleplay and interactive story app at troupechat.app, made in Ontario, Canada. Here are answers to the questions people ask most.
What is Troupe?
Troupe is a multi-character AI roleplay and interactive story app at troupechat.app, made in Ontario, Canada. It is made by Purtill. You write as yourself, and a cast of AI characters answers, each in their own voice. The characters talk to you and to each other. Troupe runs in a web browser.
How is Troupe different from single-character AI chat apps?
Most AI chat apps pair you with one character at a time. In Troupe, one story has a whole cast. For every turn a director chooses who speaks next and an actor writes that character’s line, so a scene with several characters stays coherent. You also build worlds with lorebooks, and stories that bring a cast together in a scenario.
How many characters can be in one scene?
A Troupe story can bring a whole cast together, and the director picks who speaks each turn. Your character library holds up to 25 on Free, up to 150 on Plus and any number on Pro.
How does story memory work in Troupe?
Troupe keeps the recent part of a story word for word, writes rolling summaries of older parts as the story grows, and searches the whole story history for earlier moments that matter to the current scene. That way characters can recall things that happened long ago.
How long can a Troupe story be?
There is no fixed length. For each reply the AI gets a context window (with Troupe AI, about 8,192 tokens on Free and 16,384 on Pro; your own key uses your model’s own context), which holds the recent story, rolling summaries of older parts and earlier moments recalled by search.
Is Troupe free? What do the plans cost?
Yes, Troupe has a Free plan: 300 credits every month, up to 3 stories and 25 characters, in Safe Mode, with a verified email address. Plus costs CA$7.99 a month and Pro CA$14.99 a month (both coming soon), plus applicable taxes. Credits pay for AI replies and their safety checks; one credit is worth CA$0.001. See pricing.
Can I use my own AI API key? Which providers work?
Yes. Troupe works with your own API key from OpenAI, Anthropic or OpenRouter. With your own key, the AI replies are billed by your provider, not in credits; the safety checks still use a few credits per message. Troupe takes API keys only, not consumer chat subscriptions. Your key is stored encrypted and is never shown again in full. You can also use Troupe AI, the hosted models paid with monthly credits.
Is Troupe safe? What are the content rules?
Every Troupe story currently runs in Safe Mode, meant for general audiences aged 16 and over. Sexually explicit content is not allowed; violence, horror, conflict and mature themes are allowed when they serve the story and are not gratuitous. Messages and AI replies are checked by content-safety classifiers before they are shown. Sexual content involving minors is blocked everywhere, with any AI provider, including your own key, and is reported to the Canadian Centre for Child Protection (Cybertip.ca). The full rules are in the Acceptable Use Policy.
Who can use Troupe?
Anyone aged 16 or older. Troupe is not for anyone under 16. See the Terms of Service.
Can I import characters and chats from other apps?
Yes. Troupe imports character cards saved as JSON (the Character Card V2 and V3 formats used by SillyTavern and similar apps), SillyTavern chats (.jsonl) and zipped Troupe bundles. Troupe is text-only, so PNG cards with images are not accepted: export the card as JSON instead.
What happens to my data? Can I delete it?
You can export your data or delete your account at any time in Settings, or at troupechat.app/account/delete. Your account and content are purged within 30 days of deletion; some records, such as billing and moderation records, are kept longer, as the Privacy Policy explains. Troupe does not sell personal information and does not use your content to train AI models. Privacy questions: privacy@troupechat.app.
Where is Troupe based?
Troupe is made by Purtill, a business in Ontario, Canada. Its Terms of Service are governed by the laws of Ontario, and it follows Canada’s privacy law (PIPEDA). Contact: support@troupechat.app.
How do I report content or a safety concern?
Use the Report button on any character, story, message or Marketplace listing, or email safety@troupechat.app. Reports about child safety are reviewed first. You can also report directly to Cybertip.ca.
